Report of the visit on  November 30th

On a cold, wet, miserable Sunday in November, forty eight intrepid UDFAS members, friends and families joined the coach at Uckfield Bus Station for a trip to Spencer House and the Geffrye Museum .

Despite the weather we had a most enjoyable outing.  Spencer House welcomed us with a roaring fire in the Hall and an equally warm welcome from its tour guides, who were quite inspirational.  It was excellent to see such a fine Palladian house, restored with no expense spared  by the Rothschild Trust.  This visit enhanced all that we had learnt at the November meeting by Alan Bott on Palladio and the Palladians.  After that we went on to the Geffrye Museum where we were served a delicious lunch and afterwards had the opportunity to see all the rooms decked out in their appropriate styles for Christmas – a preview of  our Christmas meeting.

Spencer House

This house was previously the family seat of the family of the late Princess of Wales, but latterly has been restored by Lord Rothschild. It is both a fine example of Palladian architecture and is London's finest surviving 18th century town house, (See November lecture), and a treasure trove of Grand Tour paintings which refer to our October and January lectures.

Geffreye Museum

This museum depicts the changes in house interiors throughout the ages. At Christmas this is particularly interesting because it shows the development of Christmas decorations. This visit ties in with our December lecture entitled "Deck the Halls."
