Writing Home: Jane Austen's Houses

The Lecture on June 9th

Jane's home at Chawton, Hampshire

Jane Austen lived and stayed in a wide variety of houses across southern England, particularly in Hampshire and Kent, Bath and London. Michael Wheeler, author of "Jane Austen and Winchester Cathedral," illustrates some of the houses that meant most to her and discusses the way in which she describes houses in her novels, and why.

The Lecturer - Michael Wheeler

Michael is a graduate of both Cambridge and London Universities. he has held Chairs at Lancaster and Southampton Universities and been lay Canon of Winchester Cathedral. He is also Chairman of the Ruskin Society.

His books include three for Cambridge University press entitled: "Heaven, Hell and the Victorians"; Ruskin's God"; and "The Old Enemies: Catholic and Protestant in Nineteenth-century English Culture." He has lectured in 16 countries to a wide range of audiences, including arts and historical societies.

Jane's last home in College Street, Winchester.
